One Killed, Two Injured in Early Morning Crash on S. Loop 289

LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating a collision that occurred early Thursday morning, October 16, on the 3600 block of South Loop 289, ending in one fatality and two injuries.

According to a press release, at approximately 2:00 a.m., officers responded to reports of a reckless driver in the area. Shortly after, at 2:11 a.m., they discovered a collision involving a passenger car and a pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup, Leland Taylor, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the passenger car, Ricardo Ferreyra, 42, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Covenant Medical Center. A passenger in the pickup, Kirstin Gallemore, 29,  sustained moderate injuries and was taken to University Medical Center.

Initial investigations suggest that Ferreyra's car was traveling west in the eastbound lanes when it collided with Taylor's pickup, which was heading east.

The eastbound lanes of South Loop 289 were closed from Slide Road to Indiana Avenue, with traffic diverted to the Quaker Avenue exit.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area, but it has since been cleared.

The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
