LUBBOCK, TX — A crash on Saturday night in Lubbock County left one person from New Home dead and two others injured.
According to DPS, the accident happened around 9:35 p.m. on January 4, at the intersection of County Road 7150 and US Highway 87, and involved a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche and a 2017 Dodge Durango.
The driver of the Chevrolet Avalanche, Fabian Vitolas, 36, from New Home, Texas, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, Christopher Dunn, 22, from Carlsbad, New Mexico, was wearing his seatbelt and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock for treatment.
The driver of the second vehicle, the 2017 Dodge Durango, was 40-year-old Amanda Rodriguez from Lubbock, Texas. She was wearing her seatbelt and suffered minor injuries and was also taken to University Medical Center for care.
According to a release, the Chevrolet Avalanche was heading west on County Road 7150 and approached the intersection at US 87. DPS said the driver of the Avalanche did not stop at the stop sign and ran through the intersection, crossing the service road and median before entering the northbound lanes of US 87. When Vitolas crossed the highway, he hit the driver’s side of the oncoming Dodge Durango.
The speed limit in that area is 75 miles per hour, and the weather was clear with dry road conditions at the time of the crash.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
