Hale Center Teen Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash South of Sweetwater

 

SWEETWATER, TX — A 19-year-old Hale Center man was killed Monday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 70, approximately six miles south of Sweetwater in Nolan County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS identified the driver as Samuel Paul Martins, who was driving a 2018 Lincoln MKZ northbound on SH 70 around 2 p.m. when, according to investigators, the vehicle failed to stay in its lane, veered off the roadway to the west, and went down an embankment.

The car then crashed through a fence and struck multiple trees. Martins was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether he was wearing a seatbelt.

The posted speed limit at the crash site is 75 mph. Weather and road conditions were reported as clear and dry at the time of the accident. No other vehicles were involved, and no additional injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
