Clovis Man Arrested for Home Invasion and Gunfire

CLOVIS, NM – On August 30, 2024, at approximately 10:10 a.m., a resident in the 1800 block of College Park Dr. called 911, reporting that an intruder had broken into their home and began shooting, according to a press release from the Clovis Police Department. 

The caller, who had locked themselves in a room, reported hearing 10-15 gunshots. Another resident in the house saw the intruder with a gun and managed to escape through a window, providing a description of the suspect.

Clovis Police Department officers quickly arrived and began searching the area. Witnesses indicated that the suspect was heading south toward Clovis Community College, prompting the college to be placed on lockdown for safety. 

Officers eventually found the suspect, 43-year-old Julian Montoya, as he was leaving the college and took him into custody. The lockdown was then lifted.

The Detective Division of the Clovis Police Department is now handling the investigation. Detectives discovered about 15 shell casings inside the home. Fortunately, no one was injured by gunfire. One resident had a cut from broken glass, and another suffered minor injuries while escaping through the window. 

Both were treated and released at the scene by Clovis EMS.

Detectives found that Montoya had entered the home by breaking a sliding glass door. There appears to be no known motive or connection between Montoya and the residents. He has been charged with Aggravated Burglary (2nd Degree Felony), Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (4th Degree Felony), and Felon in Possession of a Firearm (3rd Degree Felony).
