HOBBS, NM — One person was killed after an officer-involved shooting in Hobbs on January 6, the New Mexico State Police and Hobbs Police Department confirmed.
According to the NMSP Investigations Bureau, at approximately 6:00 p.m., two officers attempted a traffic stop on a white Dodge Charger near 209 Marland Street in Hobbs.
The driver of the Charger was 28-year-old Jesus Rubio. When officers turned on their lights, Rubio initially did not stop. The release stated he eventually pulled over, but as officers approached the vehicle, he opened his door and ignored the officer’s commands to stay in the car.
Rubio exited his vehicle and allegedly raised his arms as if pointing a firearm as he walked toward the officers. Both officers fired at least one round from their duty weapons, hitting Rubio.
EMS responded to the scene and transported Rubio to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries by the Office of the Medical Investigator. No firearm was recovered from the scene.
NMSP confirmed that neither of the officers was injured. They have been placed on standard administrative leave while the investigation continues.
The officers' identities have not been released, and the investigation is under review.
State Police Chief Troy Weisler emphasized that the NMSP is conducting an impartial investigation. "We thoroughly document the scene, collect evidence, and interview all parties involved. The district attorney will determine if the officers’ actions were justified based on the findings," he stated.
No additional information has been provided, and updates will be provided as more details are announced.
