LUBBOCK, TX — A Lubbock man was arrested on Tuesday, January 7, following a standoff with a police officer after allegedly threatening the officer with a knife.
According to court documents, a Lubbock Police officer responded to a civil disturbance call in the 1900 block of 13th Street.
When he arrived, the officer was told that Joshua Loyd, 42, was on the property, causing a disturbance and threatening people. The officer issued a Criminal Trespass Warning and ordered Loyd to leave the area.
As the officer approached Loyd, he noticed the suspect holding a silver-bladed knife in his right hand. The officer ordered him to drop the knife, but instead of complying, Loyd became extremely agitated. He reportedly shouted, “I’m gonna hurt you!” while raising the knife in a threatening way, and made the officer fear for his safety.
In response to the threat, the officer cleared the radio channel for emergency traffic and drew his taser. The officer pointed at a target on Loyd and ordered him to drop the knife again. Loyd, still holding the knife, reportedly yelled, “You’re gonna have to use your gun, suicide by cop!”
The officer tased Loyd near his left leg and torso, causing him to fall to the ground. Loyd dropped the knife, and the officer quickly took him into custody without any further incident.
Loyd was transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center, where he was booked and processed.
He is currently being held on a $40,000 bond.
