Suspect Arrested in SWAT Standoff, 1 Dead, 1 Injured

 

LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office Deputies are investigating a deadly shooting that occured early Sunday morning in northeast Lubbock.

According to a press release, on January 19, in the 5600 block of East County Road 6300, deputies responded to reports of gunshots around 3:40 a.m. and found a man who appeared to be deceased inside the residence.

Another victim, George Moreno, 37, was found with gunshot wounds to his torso and lower body. Moreno was taken to University Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.

Deputies learned that the suspect, Paxton Kubica, 48, was still inside a bedroom with a woman named Caitlynn Bryant, 36. As per procedure, deputies contacted the SWAT team and negotiated with Kubica.

Bryant left the bedroom around 4:40 a.m., and Kubica was taken into custody without incident at about 5:16 a.m.

The Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is investigating and has taken over the situation.

The name of the deceased victim is being withheld until family members are notified, says the release.
