LUBBOCK, TX — A woman was arrested on Monday after reportedly driving around south Lubbock drunk, admitting to leaving the scene of a crash, and later assaulting a Lubbock police officer during her arrest.
According to court documents, at approximately 6:05 p.m. on May 5, Lubbock Police received a 911 call reporting a Chevrolet Malibu “swerving through traffic” and “flipping off other drivers.” Minutes later, another caller reported a possible intoxicated driver parked at 8201 Quaker Avenue. Documents state that the caller described the vehicle as a blue Malibu with a female driver who had blue hair.
Around 6:11 p.m., the woman, later identified as Alajandra Brito, 31, called police, saying she had been in a crash and left the scene. Dispatchers noted her speech was heavily slurred on the phone, and she reportedly told them, "You can give me a breathalyzer if you want," before complaining about past tickets, saying, "And they wonder why I drink alcohol."
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a blue Chevrolet Malibu running in the parking lot with a woman matching the description in the driver’s seat. Brito was not cooperative when asked to turn off the vehicle and put down her phone. Officers noted Brito was slurring her speech and struggling to pronounce any of her words clearly.
An officer asked Brito to step out of the vehicle. Police say she swayed, staggered, and used her car to maintain balance. Officers conducted a Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test but were unable to complete other field sobriety tests due to how intoxicated she was. Brito was then arrested on suspicion of Driving While Intoxicated.
As officers attempted to take her into custody, Brito started to kick an officer in the legs and groin and refused to walk to the patrol vehicle. Court documents say she resisted arrest and caused injury to the officer in the process.
Brito was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on charges of Driving While Intoxicated, Resisting Arrest, and Assault on a Public Servant. As of May 7, she has posted bail.
