Father Opens Fire at Son, Girlfriend's Feet in Home Dispute

LUBBOCK, TX — A father is facing two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly firing a gun at his son and his son’s girlfriend's feet during a domestic disturbance on Sunday.

The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office was called to a disturbance between a father and son at the 15100 block of Frankford Avenue on May 25. According to court documents, Jimmy Garza Jr., 45, was highly intoxicated and was firing a handgun inside the home.

Dispatch told deputies that Garza’s son had to physically knock his father unconscious to stop him from shooting any more. Before deputies arrived, Garza had regained consciousness.

Officers approached the home with weapons drawn and called for Garza to exit the house with his hands visible, using the patrol vehicle’s public address system.

Garza’s son and his son’s girlfriend were found hiding at a nearby home and spoke with deputies about what happened. He told investigators that his father had been drinking heavily since his wife left him and started shooting at her belongings inside the house. The situation escalated when Garza allegedly began shooting recklessly near his son and his son’s girlfriend’s feet.

Court documents state Garza’s son managed to grab the handgun and throw it out the back door and over the fence before Garza picked up a glass bottle and attempted to attack him.

Garza’s son told deputies that he punched his father to protect himself and fled to a nearby house with his girlfriend. Garza’s son later received threatening text messages from his father, allegedly saying he would kill him once he sobered up.

Garza eventually surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident. Deputies noted that Garza showed signs of head trauma, consistent with his son’s account, and refused medical attention at the scene.

Jimmy Garza Jr. was charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, one for allegedly firing a loaded gun in the direction of his son and his girlfriend, and the other for threatening his son with a bottle.

He was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center with a total bond set at $100,000.
