CLOVIS, N.M. — A 16-year-old was arrested in connection with a shooting incident that occurred near Clovis High School on the night of Thursday, May 22, according to the Clovis Police Department.
Police say they received a 911 call around 9:34 p.m. reporting shots fired on 18th Street. According to a press release, the caller told dispatchers they heard four gunshots and that a bullet had hit a truck. Officers arrived at the scene and spoke with the victim, who reported no injuries, but three vehicles were damaged by gunfire.
Detectives from CPD’s Special Operations Unit were called in to investigate. According to police, the situation began when suspects were seen “egging” a house across the street from the victim’s residence.
The suspects later returned to the area, where one of the victims confronted them. During the exchange, a suspect reportedly pointed a handgun at the victims and fired multiple rounds before fleeing.
Investigators identified the shooter as a 16-year-old juvenile. An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle, Conspiracy, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm by a Minor, and Criminal Damage to Property.
Detectives went to the teen’s home early on May 29 to take him into custody.
When officers arrived, the suspect refused to come out. A search warrant was obtained, and at approximately 1:15 p.m., the warrant was executed, and the teen surrendered.
The teen was transported to a juvenile detention facility in Lovington, N.M.
The investigation is ongoing.
