UPDATE: Texas Tech Campus Shooting Leaves Supsect Dead, Two Officers Injured

UPDATE: New information is available regarding the shooting that took place near Jones AT&T Stadium early Tuesday morning.

Initially reported by Lubbock's KLBK, Authorities continue to investigate a shooting that left two Texas Tech University Police officers injured and a suspect dead early Tuesday morning near Jones AT&T Stadium.

According to Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath, the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. The identities of the suspect and the officers have not been released, and Bonath said it is too early to determine whether the truck involved was stolen or belonged to the suspect. He did confirm the suspect had no affiliation with Texas Tech and is believed to be from outside the Lubbock area.

Officers were conducting routine patrols around 12:45 a.m. when they encountered a suspicious vehicle with its door open in an unusual parking location. Bonath noted there were two overlapping incidents occurring at the time — one involving a separate traffic violation — when officers noticed the truck and went to investigate further.

At that point, the suspect reportedly pulled a firearm and opened fire on the officers. The officers returned fire, striking and killing the suspect. The two officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by EMS to University Medical Center.

LUBBOCK, TX — A shooting on the Texas Tech University campus early Tuesday left one suspect dead and two campus police officers injured, according to the Texas Tech Police Department.

It happened around 12:45 a.m. in a parking lot near the 2700 block of Marsha Sharp Freeway, near Jones Stadium. Officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle when the suspect reportedly pulled a gun and opened fire. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition. Their identities, as well as that of the suspect, have not been released.

The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting. It remains unclear whether the suspect had any affiliation with the university.

This marks the second shooting involving Texas Tech police in recent years. In 2017, Officer Floyd East Jr. was shot and killed inside the university police department by a student, who was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
