"Due to significant safety concerns and the uncertainty of the power grid stability, BISD has made the decision to cancel classes on Friday, March 14th," BISD said. "We have communicated with local and state agencies, and several dangerous environmental factors have prompted this decision."

Severe winds are expected to hit the South Plains over the next few days, and the worst of them will be bearing down on the Lubbock area tomorrow. Gusts are expected to hit up to 80 miles per hour in some areas, while strong winds are expected to hit up to 60 miles per hour in others.

"The safety and security of our students and staff are the most important factors in making these decisions. Thank you for your support," BISD concluded.

The upcoming inclement weather across West Texas continues to prompt several school districts to make these kinds of decisions. In San Angelo, San Angelo ISD recently canceled the historic San Angelo Relays, which were to be held on Friday and Saturday. Several South Plains schools compete in San Angelo at that track meet every year.
