Lubbock's Latest Restaurant Health Inspections May 31-June 6

 

LUBBOCK, TX — A donut shop received a low performance score while five other restaurants around the Hub City received adequate scores in this week’s restaurant health inspection scores.

Top performers have scores considered 90 and above, while adequate performers score between 80 and 89. Low performers have scores of 79 and below.

Below is the list of performers for the week of May 31 through June 6:

Low Performers:

Rise N Shine Donuts at 8001 Quaker Avenue, Suite A
Score: 79
Violations: 18

  • Container of milk had a temperature of 72 °F stored on stand mixer table. PIC stated they didn't know when the milk had been left out.
  • Cooked potatoes had a temperature of 70 °F located in fryer basket at fryer. PIC stated potatoes were cooked 30 minutes prior.
  • Food-contact surface of knife stored, touching box of gloves located above griddle area.
  • Dried soiled wiping cloth stored on top of clean food-contact surfaces of utensils stored above three-compartment sink.
  • Two employees did not wash hands before donning gloves, between changing tasks.
  • Two closed containers of paint stored over closed beverage containers located in dry storage room.
  • Closed container of medicine balm stored on shelf above north prep table.
  • Employee used bare hands to turn off hand washing sink after completing a proper hand wash.
  • Cardboard being used as a liner on top of oven.
  • Accumulation of grease and food debris on top of oven.
  • Accumulation of black residue on rack above three-compartment sink.
  • Two employees could not provide a food handler certificate upon request.
  • Gasket coming off of door located on reach-in cooler in dry storage room.
  • Accumulation of grease on door of hot warmer located behind service counter.
  • Floor, located in dry storage room, is soiled with a brown residue and is sticky.
  • Floor, located under three-compartment sink, is not smooth and easily cleanable.
  • Cardboard lining floor under packages of bottled beverages located in dry storage room.
  • Brown residue located on walls throughout facility.

Chili’s Bar and Grill at 607 University Avenue

  • Sliced oranges held at 53F in prep cooler. Sliced oranges had been prepared 5 hours prior.
  • Clean utensils stored with food residue, not clean to sight and touch.
  • Employee contact RTE hamburger patty with bare hands. Establishment does not have approved bare hand variance on file with City of Lubbock Environmental Health.

  • Blue liquid stored in working container, not individually identified with the common name of the toxic material.
  • Ice stored in hand sink.
  • Employee eating on table used to store RTE food.
  • Round, flat RTE tortilla chips stored uncovered, with container lid stored next to food.
  • Clean utensils stored wet, not in a self draining position that allows air drying. Utensils also soiled with food residue.
  • Utensil stored in contact with the food in container of raw shrimp.
  • Utensil stored with handle in contact with the food in container of RTE pasta.
  • Employee cloth dry clean utensils.
  • Single use article used as scoop in sliced oranges.
  • Maintenance tools stored on clean cutting boards.

  • Three pans of covered ready-to-eat kolaches, stored on service counter, with no time stamps, being held as time without temperature control. PIC stated the kolaches were prepared at 0700 and they discard the kolaches after 4 hours.
  • Raw shell eggs stored above ready-to-eat cream cheese located in reach-in cooler across from kolache prep table.
  • Raw shell eggs stored above ready-to-eat apple filling located in dry storage room reach-in cooler.
  • Date mark not provided on open package of deli sliced ham located in service reach-in cooler. PIC stated package was opened on 05/31/2025.
  • Thermometer, located in service reach-in cooler, not functional.
  • Hand washing sink, located next to three-compartment sink, blocked by two rolling racks.
  • Spatula with melted and broken parts stored on knife holder above griddle.
  • Packaged single-use foam containers stored on ground of dry storage room.
  • Accumulation of food debris on bottom shelf of reach-in freezer located in dry storage room

Marco’s Pizza at 10303 Indiana Avenue, Suite 100

  • Food residue located on blade of knife stored on knife holder.
  • Two chemical spray bottles of degreaser hanging on side of drying rack above clean lids.
  • Used sponge stored on drying rack with clean containers located above three-compartment sink.
  • Soiled drain plug stored on storage rack above packages of seasoning.
  • Container of cinnamon sugar not labeled properly to identify its contents.
  • Personal lidded drink stored on storage rack above pizza dough additive.
  • Wet mop, not in immediate use, stored inside basin of mop sink.
  • Certified food manager certificate not posted in conspicuous location to consumers.
  • Light coming through gap on bottom of east door.
  • Three-compartment sink not sealed to its adjoining wall.
  • Mop sink not sealed to its adjoining wall.
  • West hand washing sink not sealed to its adjoining wall.
  • Mop sink not sealed to its adjoining wall. Instructed PIC to ensure hand washing sink is sealed to its adjoining wall by next regular inspection. PIC stated they will comply.
  • Three-compartment sink not sealed to its adjoining wall. Instructed PIC to ensure three-compartment sink is sealed to its adjoining wall by next regular inspection. PIC stated they will comply.
  • West hand washing sink not sealed to its adjoining wall. Instructed PIC to ensure hand washing sink is sealed to its adjoining wall by next regular inspection.

Taqueria Jalisco #7 at 2211 Avenue Q

  • Raw chicharones stored in WIF with an accumulation of frozen condensate on the food, no longer safe and unadulterated.
  • Ice deflector plate soiled with an accumulation of brown debris, not clean to sight and touch.
  • Prepared on site RTE chicharones improperly date marked with the incorrect date of preparation.
  • Packaged dried chiles stored on floor in auxiliary storage unit.
  • Door seals on both WIC doors damaged, torn, and missing sections of gasket, not maintained in good repair.
  • Mop stored wet in bucket, not in a position to air dry.
  • Employee personal drinks stored above single use items.
  • Employee food stored above RTE food on hot hold unit.

  • Container of caldo de rez expired on 06/03/2025 located in walk-in cooler.

  • Chemical spray bottle with a clear solution did not bear a label to identify its contents. PIC stated solution is chlorine sanitizer.
  • Two containers of tres leches cake did not bear a date mark located in reach-in cooler near service counter. PIC stated cakes were opened on 06/03/2025.
  • Ready-to-eat queso dip had a date mark for 12 days located in walk-in cooler.
  • Ready-to-eat rice had a date mark for 8 days located in walk-in cooler.
  • Ready-to-eat posole had an 11 day date mark located in walk-in cooler.
  • Employee used bare hands to turn of faucet after completing a proper hand wash located at griddle hand washing sink.
  • Container of salt did not bear a label.
