Lubbock Police Target Speeders and Problem Motorists to Decrease Auto Crashes

LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Police Department recently started the "Operation Road Risk Reduction initiative." The operation involves directed traffic enforcement in specific locations throughout Lubbock to reduce collisions and traffic stops.

According to a notice, the Lubbock Police Department has responded to 3,799 collisions in the past year, with 1,404 resulting in injuries. These figures reflect a 10% decrease compared to last year.

Enforcement was present in locations around Lubbock, including 4th St. from the West Loop to Milwaukee Ave., 19th St. from Frankford Ave. to Milwaukee Ave., Milwaukee Ave. from 66th St. to Spur 327, and 82nd St. from Vicksburg Ave. to Chicago Ave., on October 3 and 4.

Below is a chart displaying the traffic stops from the first round of Operation Road Risk Reduction, including the number of individuals who received warnings and tickets:

Operation Road Risk Reduction

Operation Road Risk Reduction
4th St. 19th St. Milwaukee Ave. 82nd St. Day Total Ticket Warning
October 3: 19 5 22 12 58 30 28
October 4: 2 13   15 30 4 26
Zone Total: 21 18 22 27 88 34 54

The data shows that the Lubbock Police Department conducted 88 traffic stops during the two days of enforcement. While this number might appear significant, it represents just a tiny fraction of the 262,099 registered vehicles in Lubbock in 2023. It is important to note that only some vehicles are always on the road or causing issues. However, the stops were concentrated in specific areas where the Lubbock Police identified as problem intersections and roadways, considering factors such as speed limits, congestion during rush hours, and reported crashes.

Lubbock Police will continue the initiative in different locations on October 17 and 18. Those locations include Slide Rd. from 58th to 69th St., Quaker Ave. & the S. Loop, Indiana Ave. & the S. Loop, University Ave. & the S. Loop.
