LUBBOCK, TX – Monday, October 14, 2024, marks Columbus Day, a federal holiday recognized across the United States. In some states, it is also celebrated as Indigenous Peoples Day as a growing shift in how the holiday is perceived.
While Columbus Day honors Christopher Columbus, alleged studies of his treatment of Indigenous peoples have led several states to move away from the traditional celebration. In response, some have adopted Indigenous Peoples Day, which honors the native communities affected by colonization.
As a federal holiday, many services and offices will be closed or have limited hours. Major banks, including US Bank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citibank, will be closed on Columbus Day, while Chase Bank and TD Bank will remain open. Although local bank locations such as Western Bank and Happy State Bank will be closed, online banking and ATM services will remain available. The U.S. stock market will also be open.
Federal government offices, including federal courts and the U.S. Postal Service, will be closed, resulting in a pause in mail delivery for the day. However, private courier services like UPS and FedEx will operate, though customers may experience delays.
State and local government offices will generally follow the federal holiday schedule, but some may have limited hours or remain open. Residents are encouraged to check with local offices before visiting.
Retailers such as United Supermarkets, Target, Walmart, HEB, and CVS will maintain regular business hours and will be open for shopping.
