LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock voters approved Proposition A on Tuesday, passing a $103.4 million initiative to fund seven major roadway projects to expand and repair the city’s infrastructure.
The final unofficial vote tally showed 48,863 in favor and 43,236 against. Election Day results added that the proposition passed 53% to 47% with 92,099 votes cast.
The approved projects are expected to address growing traffic needs and improve road conditions across the Hub City.
The proposition sparked some controversy leading up to the vote, as local businesses voiced concerns that the roadwork could disrupt customer access. Some citizens argued it was too soon for another road bond following the approval of a similar measure just two years ago in 2022, and others say the city's brick roads are a hazard.
Many citizens of Lubbock believed updating the streets was essential as Lubbock continues to grow and develop.
With Prop A passing, the average Lubbock homeowner could see an annual property tax increase of about $30. However, homeowners aged 65 and older will not experience a tax increase due to state exemptions for senior citizens.
