With 2024 coming to an end, many Texans will be celebrating with fireworks lighting up the night sky. According to the Texas Association of Counties, fireworks retailers with proper permits can sell fireworks to the public from December 20 through midnight on January 1, depending on county regulations.

You must be at least 16 years old to purchase and possess fireworks in Texas.

According to the City of Lubbock, fireworks are ILLEGAL within city limits, as stated in the Lubbock Code of Ordinances Article 10.08. Those who violate this ordinance can be fined up to $1,000 per violation.

If you're in an area where fireworks are allowed, it's important to prioritize safety. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before celebrating the New Year:

  • Always read the labels before lighting any fireworks.
  • Store fireworks in dry, cool places to prevent accidents.
  • When lighting fireworks, make sure you’re at a safe distance from buildings, grass, or dry leaves. Use a flat, smooth surface and light only one firework at a time.
  • Keep water nearby to put out any potential fires.
  • Never attempt to relight a firework that didn’t ignite the first time.
  • Soak used fireworks before disposing of them, and always store them in a metal trash can, away from any structures.

Be aware that fireworks can sometimes be mistaken for gunshots. The main difference is that gunshots sound like quick, sharp pops, while fireworks have a more distinct pattern of noises. People are also advised to keep dogs and other animals inside and away from fireworks.
