LUBBOCK, TX — Monday, January 20, 2025, will mark two federal holidays: Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Inauguration Day.
Schools and government offices will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday to honor his legacy.
Inauguration Day also happens to fall on the same day. President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will be sworn in and take office to officially start the new presidential term.

Public & Private Schools
- Lubbock ISD: All schools closed
- Lubbock-Cooper ISD: All schools closed
- Frenship ISD: All schools closed
- Harmony Public School: Closed
- All Saints Episcopal School: Closed
- Christ The King Private School: Student holiday, professional development day for staff
- Trinity Christian School: Closed
- Abernathy ISD: All schools closed
- Idalou ISD: All schools closed
- Lorenzo ISD: All schools closed
- New Deal ISD: All schools closed
- Roosevelt ISD: All schools closed
- Shallowater ISD: All schools closed

Grocery Stores and Retail Stores
All grocery stores and pharmacies will be open. Major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Best Buy will also be open on Monday, but make sure to check with local stores, as they may adjust their hours.
Restaurants and Bars
Most restaurants and bars will be open on MLK Jr. Day. Be sure to call or check online for the correct hours of operation.
City Government Offices and Services
City of Lubbock offices, including the Utilities office, will be closed.
All Lubbock Public Library locations and cultural spots, such as the Buddy Holly Center, Silent Wings Museum, and the Garden & Arts Center, will be closed.
Drop-off recycling sites, citizen convenience stations, and landfill facilities will be closed.
Residential trash collection for Monday will be moved to Tuesday, January 21, and Tuesday’s collection will happen on Wednesday, January 22.
Banks
Most national banks, including Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Capital One, PNC Bank, and Wells Fargo, will be closed. Many local banks will also be closed, but check with your local branch as hours may differ.
All online banking and ATMs will be available to use.
Postal Services
All USPS and UPS locations will be closed.
FedEx locations will remain open, but some services might be delayed because of the holiday.
Stock Market
The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on January 20.
