LUBBOCK, TX — Xcel Energy plans to shut off power for about 180 customers in the South Plains region of Texas on Tuesday, March 4, to reduce the risk of wildfires.
This decision comes after weather forecasts predict high winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation, which increase the chances of wildfires spreading quickly.
According to a press release, Xcel Energy uses the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) when other safety options are insufficient.
The customers affected live primarily around the Post, Texas area and will experience power outages starting at 10 a.m. CT. Xcel Energy stated this is a last-resort action to keep people safe during extreme weather conditions.

“We’re closely monitoring the weather and adjusting as needed,” said Adrian Rodriguez, president of Xcel Energy – New Mexico, Texas. “We’ve narrowed the area that will be impacted, but it’s important for everyone to know that high winds could cause other outages, even outside of the PSPS.”
Xcel Energy is contacting affected customers, including those who rely on medical equipment that needs power, and advising them to prepare for potential outages.
Customers can check if their address is affected by the PSPS through Xcel’s website.
“We’re expecting severe weather in the South Plains that could lead to wildfires and cause a lot of damage,” Rodriguez added. “We’re taking steps to reduce the risk and our crews are ready to restore power as quickly as possible once it’s safe.”
Xcel Energy will continue to update the public on the situation through its website and outage map. Customers can check for updates here to see when power will be restored.
