Xcel Energy Warns of Possible Power Outages Due to Weather

LUBBOCK, TX — Xcel Energy warns customers in Texas and New Mexico to prepare for possible power outages this week due to severe weather.

According to a press release, high winds and low humidity are expected to increase the risk of wildfires in the area, with the most dangerous conditions likely to hit on Friday, March 14.

The company advises people, especially those who depend on medical equipment that requires electricity, to plan ahead in case of an outage.

To help prevent wildfires, Xcel Energy will use two tools: Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) and Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

EPSS allows power lines to stay on during risky conditions but adds extra protection. If the weather worsens, Xcel might use a PSPS to cut off power as a safety measure.

The forecast could change, and Xcel Energy will update customers throughout the week. Xcel Energy is also making sure crews are ready to restore power safely if outages do happen.

Customers can find more information and updates on the Xcel Energy website. An outage map can be found here.
