LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Public Library has been honored with the 2025 Libraries Change Communities Award, presented by the Texas Library Association. This award is given annually to a community effort that promotes positive change through library programs and initiatives across Texas.
According to a press release, the award recognizes creative and impactful projects that bring communities together and offer new ideas for others to use.
Lubbock Public Library received the award for its work on the 2024 City-Wide Back 2 School Bash, held in partnership with Texas Tech University.
On August 3, 2024, the event brought together 12,800 people from Lubbock and the West Texas area. It offered free school supplies, backpacks, immunizations, haircuts, and access to a community resource fair with over 100 vendors. The goal of the event was to create a one-stop shop where families could find everything they needed to start the school year off right.
This year, the City-Wide Back 2 School Bash will take place on Wednesday, July 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.
At the 2025 TLA Annual Conference in Dallas, Groves Branch Manager Kaitlyn Call will accept the award on behalf of the library team, which includes Charley Whalen, Kaye Aguilar, Yadriel Dehoyos, Carly McGrath, David Franks, and everyone who contributed to the event's success.
