LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock Water Utilities plans to replace galvanized steel water service lines as part of a new federal requirement to reduce lead exposure in drinking water.
In October 2024, the city released its Lead Service Line Inventory and confirmed that Lubbock’s water system is lead-free. However, 152 customers were identified with galvanized steel pipes, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined need to be replaced.
According to a press release, the first round of notifications was sent out to affected customers on November 15, 2024, explaining the reason for the replacement and offering advice on how to reduce exposure to lead.
The replacement program will start in fall 2027 and is expected to be completed by 2037. Lubbock Water Utilities is working on a plan to replace the galvanized lines in coordination with property owners.
More details will be shared as the program moves forward, says the City of Lubbock.
The city will continue to update customers and share information about the replacement process as it progresses. To learn more about the city's water quality, visit www.mylubbock.us/waterqualityreport.
