LUBBOCK, TX — The City of Lubbock has announced that Sarah Weede will be the first Director of the West Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
According to a press release, Weede, a Lubbock native and U.S. Air Force veteran, brings a strong background in military service and community leadership to the role. She spent over ten years in the Air Force as an Airborne Mission Systems Operator, stationed at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia, and participated in multiple combat deployments.
After her military career, Weede stayed deeply involved in veterans' organizations. She currently serves as the Commander of VFW Post 2466 in Lubbock and holds leadership positions in Texas VFW District 9 and the VFW’s National Women Veterans Council.
She is known for advocating for mental health resources, veteran benefits, and outreach programs.
Weede also worked as the Assistant Director of Emergency Management at Texas Tech University, helping coordinate safety efforts for the campus community of over 40,000 people.
"I’m truly honored and incredibly excited to join the City of Lubbock team as Director of the West Texas State Veterans Cemetery. To be entrusted with the care of this sacred ground—where our nation’s heroes are laid to rest—is both a privilege and a profound responsibility," said Weede.
"I don’t take it lightly. This cemetery is more than a final resting place; it is a living tribute to courage, sacrifice, and service. I’m humbled to serve in a role that allows me to give back to those who gave us everything, and I will do so with the deepest respect for every veteran and every family we serve."
Weede’s first day with the City of Lubbock will be on Monday, May 12.
