City of Lubbock Provides Tips for Handling Fats, Oils, Grease

LUBBOCK, TX — The City of Lubbock Water Utilities Department reminds the public to properly dispose of fats, oils, and grease (FOG) to prevent damage to household plumbing and the city’s sewer system.

FOG is liquid when hot, but once it cools, it hardens and sticks to the inside of pipes. Over time, it combines with food particles, wipes, and other materials to form blockages. These clogs can slow or stop the flow of wastewater, leading to backups inside homes or even burst pipes.

To prevent problems, the city recommends that residents:

  • Scrape leftover food and grease into the trash or compost.

  • Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing.

  • Let grease cool and collect it in a container before throwing it away or recycling it.

Residents can drop off larger amounts of used grease at the Southside Citizens Convenience Station at 1631 84th Street. The site is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
