Lubbock Issues PSA Concerning Safety Over Bat Encounters

LUBBOCK, Texas — The City of Lubbock is reminding residents to avoid handling bats after several rabid bats were recently found in the community.

City officials urge residents who suspect an animal may have rabies to contact Lubbock Animal Services immediately at 806-775-3357 or 806-775-2057.

Any mammal can carry rabies, but wildlife such as coyotes, bats, skunks, foxes and raccoons are considered the highest risk. Residents are advised not to approach or interact with these animals. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans and pets through the bite or scratch of an infected animal.

“Even healthy-looking bats can carry rabies,” said Steven Greene, director of Lubbock Animal Services. “Never attempt to pick it up, even if it appears sick, injured or dead.”

  • Do not touch bats. Keep children and pets away from any bat found indoors or on the ground.

  • Call for help. Contact Lubbock Animal Services for safe removal. If a bat has come into contact with a person or pet, it should be tested for rabies. Animal Control will coordinate the testing at no charge to residents.

  • Vaccinate your pets. Ensure dogs, cats and other animals are current on rabies vaccinations.

  • Get medical care if exposed. If bitten, scratched or if bare skin contacts a bat, wash the area with soap and water immediately and seek medical attention.

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms begin but is preventable with prompt treatment after exposure.
