Lubbock Fire Rescue Receives First-Ever Safe Haven Baby Box Surrender in Texas

LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock Fire Rescue safely received a newborn Monday through its Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station No. 9, marking the first recorded Safe Haven Baby Box surrender in Texas.

LFR said the surrender complied with Texas Safe Haven laws, which allow a parent to anonymously and safely relinquish an unharmed infant. When the newborn was placed inside the temperature-controlled Baby Box, an alarm immediately notified firefighters, who responded within seconds. UMC EMS personnel then transported the infant for medical evaluation.

The baby was found to be healthy and is now in the care of medical and child welfare professionals, according to Lubbock Fire Rescue.
