Lubbock Fire Rescue Urges Residents to Take Precautions this Weekend

LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock Fire Rescue is urging residents to take precautions as severe winter weather is forecast to impact the area in the coming days, bringing the potential for snow, sleet and freezing temperatures.

Officials said the forecast could create hazardous driving conditions and increase the risk of weather-related emergencies. Fire officials are reminding the public to prioritize safety both at home and on the road.

Space Heater Fire Safety

Lubbock Fire Rescue noted that space heaters are a leading cause of residential fires during winter months and urged residents to follow these safety tips:

• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable or combustible materials

• Place heaters on a flat, level surface

• Plug heaters directly into wall outlets

• Avoid using power strips or extension cords with space heaters

Roadway Safety

Fire officials also advised motorists to use caution during winter conditions:

• Stay off roadways if travel is not necessary

• Slow down, increase following distances and remain alert

• Move over and slow down for roadway workers and emergency personnel

Carbon Monoxide Safety

Alternative heating sources can increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, officials said.

• Ensure homes are equipped with working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

• Residents may request a free carbon monoxide check by calling the Lubbock Fire Rescue non-emergency line at 806-775-2635

• Anyone experiencing symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, confusion or shortness of breath should call 911 immediately

Lubbock Fire Rescue said it has taken proactive steps ahead of the storm, including:

• Staffing additional fire apparatus beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend

• Preparing vehicles for icy and snowy roadway conditions

• Treating fire stations to maintain safe access for emergency responses

• Coordinating around the clock with the City of Lubbock Office of Emergency Management and partner public safety agencies

Officials said crews will continue monitoring weather conditions and stand ready to respond as needed.
