SAN ANTONIO, TX — The Shallowater Fillies girls’ basketball team achieved greatness on Saturday, March 2. After a grueling playoff run, the Fillies took down No. 22 Huntington in overtime to claim a 3A State Championship at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX, 54-49. This was the third state championship in the program's history.
Shallowater’s Keelie Williams hit a three with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter to give the Fillies their first lead of the ballgame, 7-6. Lillie Wells, Linley Wright, and Maggie Grimes added seven more points to give Shallowater a 14-8 lead at the end of the first. Huntington roared back in the second quarter to take the lead at the half. The Lady Red Devils outscored the Phillies 16-8 in the second to take a 24-22 lead heading to the locker room.
Sophomore Carlee Buckley kickstarted Shallowater in the 3rd quarter after Huntington came out of the locker room on a 5-0 run. A made three kept Shallowater close as the Fillies trailed 29-25 with less than five to play in the third quarter. Shallowater hung close throughout the second half but would not take another lead until less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter. After two made free throws, Shallowater found themselves up three, 45-42, with 3.9 seconds to play. Huntington made the inbound pass and threw up a prayer. The basketball went off the glass and in at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, 45-45.
In the overtime period, the Fillies picked up where they left off in the fourth quarter to slowly pull away from Huntington. Two made threes, and a couple of free throws gave the Fillies the 2024 State Title as Shallowater defeated Huntington in overtime 54-49.
Keelie Williams led the Fillies with 13 points on the day, with Carlee Buckley close behind with 12 points. Maggie Grimes added 10 points, and Linley Wright and Addison Pitts scored eight and seven points, respectively. Williams added to the big day with more prestigious hardware. She was selected as the 2024 3A Girls MVP for her performance during the Championship Game.
