Frenship Football Poised to Make Waves in 2024

WOLFFORTH, TX — The Texas High School Football Season is finally here, and the Frenship Tigers football team enters 2024 with some high expectations. The Tigers finished 2023 with a 9-3 overall record last season and achieved another playoff win under head coach Jay Northcutt. With what’s happening around the rest of the district, the Tigers are in a prime position to make a statement this year. Here is how the Tigers’ schedule shakes out.

Looking at the Tigers’ schedule at a glance shows several tough opponents on the schedule before Frenship even enters District 2-6A play. The team that jumps out immediately is Byron Nelson. The Bobcats finished with a perfect 10-0 mark in the regular season en route to a romp through the playoffs that only stopped when Byron Nelson came up against the perennial juggernaut that is South Lake Carroll. With new faces across the board, the Tigers should be challenged early.

Breaking down district play, the Tigers are in an excellent position to compete for a district championship this season. While Frenship graduated quarterback and now Kansas State Wildcat Hudson Hutcheson, the word around the athletic department is that the Tigers’ receiving corps should make serious waves this season. Notably, Leyton Stone returns in 2024 after compiling 94 catches for 1,658 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns last year. Stone is committed to play for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2025.

The Tigers' first matchup on the road against Midland High should be a tough first test, as the Bulldogs have all but reloaded from last season. Odessa High should take a step back this year with a young roster on the field, but the Permian Panthers will also be a serious contender. Head Coach Clint Hartman always puts an excellent team on the field at Midland Legacy, but losing a Division I-caliber quarterback in Marcus Davila will hurt the Rebels.

Finally, the Tigers close out the season against the San Angelo Central Bobcats. The ‘Cats finished 1-9 a season ago, but that record is deceptive. Central hung tough with every opponent they played outside of Midland Legacy in 2023, losing several games by less than 10 points. Central has a new head coach this year. Mark Smith came down from Brent Venables staff at the University of Oklahoma to re-enter the High School game. The Bobcats should be better this season and could act as a potential trap game for the Tigers looking ahead to the playoffs.

Frenship opens 2024 with its first official scrimmage at home against Amarillo High on Friday, August 23, at Peoples Bank Stadium. The start time is still to be determined.
