Patrick Mahomes Donates $5 Million to Texas Tech University

LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech University announced on Thursday, August 22, that Patrick Mahomes II donated $5 million to the Campaign for Fearless Champions. The $5 million is the final piece of the $242 million total for the South End Zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center project.

Texas Tech said that in light of this generous gift, the University will name the walkthrough area in the Womble Football Center in Mahomes’ name. The NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl Champion will also be recognized by being the namesake for Texas Tech’s meeting room and the offensive coordinator’s office in the new South End Zone Building to Jones AT&T Stadium.

"When we first launched this campaign, Patrick was only a freshman, and now it is fitting that we approach the end of the campaign with a gift of his own," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said about Mahomes. "We couldn't be prouder to announce this gift from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. We are so proud of Patrick for all he has accomplished and how he has continually supported Texas Tech on a global scale."

During his time at Texas Tech, Mahomes quickly became a fan favorite through his exciting plays and almost ridiculous ability to improvise on the move. He compiled video game number stats as a Red Raider and cemented himself as one of the best quarterbacks in Texas Tech history. He threw from more than 11,000 yards and 93 touchdowns in three years as a starter. He finished his college career with a 152.0 overall quarterback ranking.

After joining the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, Mahomes saw a meteoric rise to the top, including two NFL MVPs and three Super Bowl Championships with the Chiefs. He continues to be one of, if not the most dominant, quarterbacks in the National Football League under Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid.

Mahomes continues to be an avid supporter of his alma mater. The star quarterback used an open weekend during his busy NFL schedule over the past three seasons to support the Red Raiders in person. He’s been to road games in Houston and Kansas and returned to campus here in Lubbock for his induction into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor in 2022.

The Chiefs open up their schedule at home against the Ravens on Thursday, September 5, for the official start of the 2024 NFL Season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:20 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Red Raiders open 2024 a week before that in Lubbock against Abilene Christian University on Saturday, August 31, at 6:30 p.m.
