Frenship Still Explosive on Offense in 2024

WOLFFORTH, TX — The Frenship Tigers hosted their final scrimmage before the start of the 2024 High School Football season against Amarillo High on Friday night. Both teams looked closer to top-form as last minute adjustments were made during the glorified practice.

Check out the scrimmage highlights from both teams below:

The two teams took turns on offense as they practiced different sets, formations, and play calls for over an hour before they lined up against each other for a “live quarter” game.

During the practice, Tigers’ fans received a first glance at the new Frenship offense, which features several receivers who can light up the highlight reel, notably Leyton Stone and Chase Campbell.

“When you have players like Leyton Stone and Chase Campbell, not only are they really good, but they have a lot of experience now,” Tigers Head Coach Jay Northcutt said after the scrimmage. “Chase was young last year, and no one really knew about him, but he’s no secret now. When you have two outside receivers like that, it really puts pressure on the “D” because they can’t just double one up without figuring out what to do with the other one.”

Both receivers had phenomenal scrimmages, making an impact. Frenship’s strength will once again be in the passing game this season. Although some of the other guys don’t have as much of the spotlight, several Tigers can make plays.

On defense, the Tigers look ready to compete with anyone. Amarillo High proved that they are still a perennial contender in 5A football with several outstanding drives on the night, but Frenship showed they also can play defense. The highlight of the evening came when Amarillo High broke away from the defenders and looked to score an easy touchdown. One of the Tigers’ team captains, Matt Allen, chased the ball carrier down and ripped the ball away just before Amarillo High crossed the goal line. Frenship recovered the fumble and prevented the score.

“You know, I thought that was the highlight of the night,” Northcutt said. “That was Matt Allen and it doesn’t surprise me that that was him. He’s one of our team captains and to come in here and make a hustle play like that was huge for us.”

The Tigers need that kind of grit headed into another tough schedule with non-district opponents like Byron Nelson on the schedule as early as next week.

“That’s something that we will point out and build upon,” Northcutt concluded. “We want that to be part of our identity.”

The Frenship Tigers open up 2024 on the road at a neutral site in Abilene against Byron Nelson. The powerhouse from the metroplex should be an excellent test for the Tigers early. The game will be played at Abilene Wylie’s Hugh Sandifer Stadium, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. on Friday, August 30.
