Texans Defense Dominates Sunday Night Football

HOUSTON, TX — A staunch Houston Texans’ defense dominated a struggling Chicago Bears offense to help secure a 2-0 start on Sunday night. The Texans harrassed Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams all night in the young man’s primetime debut on the way to a 19-13 victory in Houston.

The win on Sunday came down to who’s defense emerged dominant on a night where Houston’s quarterback, C.J. Stroud, while effective, struggled to find the end zone. Stroud finished 23/36 for 260 yards and a touchdown against a talented Bears defense.

The Texans’ offense only found paydirt once on their 2nd drive when Stroud hit Nico Collins for a short pass over the middle. Collins weaved his way through defenders to score from 28 yards out and secure the lead early in the 2nd Quarter. All other points came from field goals, set up by takeaways from the Houston Defense.

The Texans never allowed Williams to find his feet in his second start in the NFL. Houston sacked the Bears’ new quarterback 7 times in the contest while adding an additional 11 quarterback hits. The Texans also added two interceptions on the night, one from Kamari Lassiter late in the 3rd and one from Derek Stingley Jr. early in the 4th quarter.

Williams struggled in his second game of action. Under constant harassment from Houston’s front seven, Williams finished the night 23/37, 174 yards, and two interceptions. At only 4.7 yards per completion, the young quarterback still has a way to go before Chicago can be competitive.

Despite the lack of production on offense, the Bear’s defense gave the team a chance to win at the end of the ball game. Williams had the ball in his hands at the Bears’ 20-yard line with 1:40 to go in the 4th with no timeouts. However, Houston did not let Williams be the hero. Two incomplete passes led to a 3rd down sack. Backed up against the goal line with time running out, a miscommunication between Williams and his receiver gave the ball back to the Texans for Stroud to kneel out. Houston claimed victory, 19-13.

Stroud and the Texans (2-0) return to action on Sunday, September 22, when Houston travels to Minneapolis to play the Minnesota Vikings (2-0). Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. Minnesota defeated the San Francisco 49ers (1-1) 23-17 on Sunday.
