GREENVILLE, SC – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders completed their first fall tennis tournament, with two doubles teams winning their respective flights and two players advancing to their singles flight finals at the Furman Fall Tennis Classic. The team amassed 12 singles wins and eight doubles victories throughout the tournament.
Texas Tech adapted despite inclement weather forcing the team to travel to Clemson for day one. Senior Avelina Sayfetdinova, ranked No. 99 in singles, claimed her first ranked win of the season, defeating No. 108 Gabriella Broadfoot (NC State) in a tough three-set match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Freshmen Hailey Murphy and Mariia Hlahola also secured their first wins in the Scarlet and Black, with Murphy defeating Mississippi State's Chiara Di Genova (6-2, 6-4) and Hlahola overcoming Mississippi State's Gianna Oboniye (2-6, 7-5, 6-1).
The Lady Raiders excelled in doubles as well, with all four teams advancing on day one. Hlahola and Sayfetdinova took down Ellie Eades and Elizabeth Stevens (Kentucky) 6-4, while Murphy and Yekaterina Dmitrichenko defeated Clemson's Hatton and Aslanisvili, 6-2. Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif beat Clemson's Davis and Tecora (7-5), while Elena Daskalova and Arina Oreshchenkova claimed a 6-3 win over Clemson's Crawford and Clayton.
Day 2 Highlights:
- Hlahola and Sayfetdinova captured the flight one doubles title, coming back from a 0-3 deficit to win in a tiebreaker against NC State's Broadfoot and Zampardo, 7-6 (5).
- Lila and Sherif secured the flight three doubles championship with a 6-1 victory over Wake Forest's Carton and Tannenbaum.
- In singles, Oreshchenkova and Murphy advanced to their flight finals with hard-fought wins.
On the final day, Elena Daskalova led the charge for the Lady Raiders, posting a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Clemson's Crawford, while Dmitrichenko earned a 6-4, 6-1 win against South Carolina's Misa Malkin.
The Lady Raiders will next compete at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C., from Sept. 21-29.
