LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Estacado Matadors ran into a wall over the last two weeks after a hot start to the 2024 Football Season. The Matadors have the ability to put on a show but faltered against two talented teams recently. Estacado looks to correct the skid on Friday night, September 20, against the Sweetwater Mustangs at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.
Head Coach Eric Ward gave his thoughts on what needs to be done to turn the Matadors’ fortune around against the Mustangs on Friday night.
“Turnovers will get you every time,” Coach Ward said. The Matadors held the lead early in their 38-7 loss to West Plains last week. “Despite the score, we had two 100-yard rushers last week,” Ward continued. “We haven’t hit our stride yet, but it’s coming.”
Turnovers and penalties continue to hurt Estacado. Several extremely talented athletes are on both sides of the ball for the Matadors, but they haven’t quite put a complete game together since Estacado’s win over Jim Ned in Week 1.

Ward believes that the turnaround will happen this Friday. Sweetwater comes into this matchup with an identical record (1-2) as the Matadors, with both losses coming to talented teams (Seminole, Idalou). Two teams desperate for a win will clash. The contest will come down to whoever takes care of the ball and controls the clock. Sweetwater can be electric through the air, but Estacado has athletes who can compete with anyone.
Kickoff in Friday’s matchup is slated for 8 p.m. at Lowrey Field at Plains Capital Park in Lubbock.
