Late Game Heroics Lift Cowboys Over Steelers

PITTSBURGH, PA — A lengthy rain delay and a tough road matchup had all the factors needed for an adverse outcome for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Determination and grit were needed for Dallas to claim its third victory of the 2024 season. A late touchdown drive in the closing seconds of the contest saw the Cowboys beat their bitter rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in an instant NFL classic, 20-17.

The Cowboys (3-2) secured their second straight win after Prescott, despite a night filled with mistakes, engineered a 70-yard drive capped by a lunging Tolbert touchdown on fourth down.

Pittsburgh (3-2) suffered its second consecutive loss after starting the season 3-0. The game, which kicked off nearly 90 minutes late due to severe weather, saw the Steelers struggle offensively, managing only 222 yards against a Dallas defense missing stars Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.

Prescott threw for 352 yards and two touchdowns to counterbalance the otherwise unfortunate night for the NFL's highest paid player. He added two interceptions and a fumble throughout the game. Despite the turnovers, he maintained his composure, guiding the Cowboys to a late victory.

Pittsburgh quarterback Justin Fields threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns, including a 6-yard shovel pass to tight end Pat Freiermuth with 4:56 remaining to give the Steelers a 17-13 advantage. However, Prescott responded, driving the Cowboys the length of the field against Pittsburgh's second-ranked defense.

With time winding down in the 4th, Dallas faced a critical 4th down. On the final play, Prescott rolled left and found Tolbert across the goal line to secure the game-winning score with only 20 seconds left on the clock. Pittsburgh had a final chance to counter but fumbled during the last gasp of "backyard football."

Dallas returns to action on Sunday, October 13, to host the Detroit Lions at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The Lions come off a bye week and should prove a handful for a Cowboys' team still rife with mistakes.
