ARLINGTON, TX — People knew the Detroit Lions were a good football team headed into Sunday’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. No one thought that the Lions would hand Dallas their worst home loss in the modern era. The Lions picked apart the Dallas defense all game, and the Cowboys turned the ball over five times in a 47-9 blowout loss to Detroit at home.
Believe it or not, the Cowboys actually led in this contest after a 34-yard Brandon Aubrey field goal gave Dallas a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter. That’s about the only positive for the Cowboys on the day. Jared Goff and the Lions’ offense scored on 10-straight drives to rout the Cowboys. A touchdown in the first quarter gave way to a Dak Prescott interception, where the Lions would follow up with a field goal to take a 10-3 lead at the end of the first.
Several punts and ten more Detroit points later, Cowboys’ head coach, Mike McCarthy, decided to go for a 4th down attempt at the Cowboys’ 38-yard line. Like most events on the day, it did not work out, and Detroit took a 27-6 lead and headed to the break.
Detroit would outscore Dallas 20-3 in the 2nd half in a game that everyone in Arlington would soon hope to forget. Dak Prescott had an abysmal day on the stat sheet, 17-33 for 178 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. The Cowboys also again failed to run the ball. Seventeen attempts across six ball carries netted a paltry 53 yards on the day.
Meanwhile, the Lions’ Jared Goff delivered another solid performance with over 300 passing yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon. However, it wasn’t all sunshine for Detroit on Sunday. Early in the 3rd quarter, the Lions’ star pass rusher, Aidan Hutchinson, suffered a severe lower leg injury when he sacked Prescott. Hutchinson looked to have broken his lower leg when he whipped the leg into his teammate while bringing Prescott down. Hutchinson had to be carted off the field with his leg in an air cast. He is likely done for the season.
There are several questions that need to be answered in Dallas. The injury bug continues to hamper the Cowboys on defense. Michah Parsons missed another game this week and the pass rush and run defense suffered. On offense, the one-dimensional Cowboys struggled to moved the ball through the air after it was apparent that the run game would be non-existent.
Jerry Jones said that he has no plans at this time to make a coaching change, but Mike McCarthy has to know that his job is on the line over the next few games.
The Dallas Cowboys limp into their bye week next week with several questions to answer and issues to address. Dallas returns to action on Sunday, October 27, when the Cowboys travel to Santa Clara, California, to take on the San Francisco 49ers. That game is scheduled for 7:20 p.m.
