Texas Tech's HC McGuire Named to Coach of the Year Award Watch List

LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has been named to the watch list for the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award, recognizing the nation’s top collegiate head coach. McGuire, one of 27 coaches nationwide and one of five from the Big 12 Conference to make the list, has guided the Red Raiders to a 5-1 start and an unbeaten 3-0 record in Big 12 play.

In his third season with the program, McGuire has quickly made his mark, posting a 20-12 overall record, including a 13-8 record in conference games. He is the first Texas Tech coach to achieve 20 wins in 32 or fewer games since Steve Sloan accomplished the feat from 1975-77. The Red Raiders' current 3-0 start in Big 12 play is their first since 2013.

McGuire's leadership has the Red Raiders on the brink of a significant milestone, as a victory against Baylor on Saturday would not only extend Texas Tech's unbeaten streak in conference play but also secure bowl eligibility for a fourth consecutive season. The Red Raiders lead the Big 12 with 41 all-time bowl appearances.

Texas Tech has been formidable at home under McGuire, boasting a 14-3 record at Jones AT&T Stadium, including six straight wins dating back to 2023. The streak is the program’s longest since a 12-game home win streak from 2007-09.

The Red Raiders will face Baylor at 3 p.m. Saturday in a sold-out stadium, with the game airing on ESPN2 and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
