Post Remains Undefeated After a Dominant District Win

POST, TX — The Post Antelopes hosted the Olton Mustangs for an all-important district matchup that would help pave the way for a district championship. The stands were packed at Jimmy Redman Memorial Stadium in Post on Friday, October 18, in what should have been an excellent matchup. However, the Antelopes dominated both sides of the ball all night and pulled off a landslide victory, 48-6.\

Antelope fans received a healthy dose of Posts’ running back Ian Vergara early in what would define Posts’ offense all night. After Olton held Post scoreless in the 1st quarter, the Antelopes flipped the script from there on out. Vergara scored the first of his five, yes FIVE, touchdowns on the evening early in the 2nd quarter to give Post a 7-0 lead. Olton looked like they would answer with points, but a stingy Post defense stripped the football, recovered the fumble, and handed the ball back to the offense. Another Vergara touchdown capped off a 40-yard bomb to Adan Gonzales from Landyn Garcia that set the Antelopes up at Olton’s 2-yard line.

Matters turned from bad to worse for the Mustangs on the ensuing drive. A tipped pass was intercepted by the Antelopes as Post looked to put Olton away early. Keyandre Jefferson took a short pass on the next play, made a man miss, and outran everyone to the end zone for a 43-yard touchdown. Both teams headed to the locker room with Post up 21-0 at the half.

Post impressed their will on Olton in the 2nd half. Vergara would score three more touchdowns in a half where the Antelopes ground out much of the clock on the ground. Most impressive, though, were the Antelopes on defense. Olton struggled on offense, but it was Posts’ relentless pass rush that set up Olton for failure. Whether it was someone on defense sacking the quarterback, forcing a bad punt, or knocking the ball loose, Post dominated. The Antelopes forced three more turnovers in the second half, one that was scooped up by Luka Perez and returned 37 yards for a defensive touchdown.

Olton managed to finally put points on the board on a touchdown pass with 26 seconds remaining in the contest for a semblance of a moral victory. Olton is not a bad football team, it was just not their night on Friday night.

Post claimed a dominant district victory, 48-7.

Antelopes’ Head Coach John Wright gave his opinion on his team’s performance after the game. Watch that interview below:

The player of the game had to be Posts’ leading rusher, Ian Vergara. The young man rushed for over 200 yards and scored five touchdowns. Coach Wright gave as much credit to his offensive line as he did his running back, but if Post continues to be this physical down the road, a district championship will be the least of the Antelopes’ accomplishments this season.

The undefeated Post Antelopes (7-0) return to action on Friday, October 25, when the Antelopes make a road trip to play New Home. That matchup is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m.
