AMARILLO, TX — The Lubbock Monterey Plainsmen are 2024 District 2-5A Champions after a dominant 49-0 victory over Amarillo Caprock on Thursday night, November 7. The Plainsmen entered Dick Bivens Stadium, tied for first place in the district, and cemented a share of the title with the victory.
Despite cold temperatures and rainy conditions, Monterey jumped out to an early lead in the 1st quarter thanks to explosive plays from quarterback Luke Arrington and runningbacks Kyree Baxter and Duece Moore. Caprock found little success on offense all night, thanks to a dominant showing from the Plainsmens’ defense.
The Plainsmen truly broke away in the 2nd quarter thanks to takeaways forced by the defense. In the quarter, Arrington began with a touchdown pass. After a punt, Kyree Baxter broke through the defense for a 77-yard touchdown. The Plainsmen then blocked a punt to set up a 24-yard touchdown pass from Arrington to Cam Taylor. Shortly after, Baxter, playing linebacker, intercepted a deflected pass and returned the pick to the house to make the score 42-0 headed into halftime.
Monterey scored on their first drive coming out of the break before the backups came in to finish out the game. Duece Moore scored from 16 yards out to put Monterey up 49-0. The Plainsmen made one final defensive stand with less than two minutes to go in the 4th quarter to complete the shutout and claim their share of the District 3-5A Championship.
After the game, a proud Head Coach, Judd Thrash, talked about his team. Check out that interview below:
