Post and Abernathy needed a few plays to get their feet wet in the first quarter and figure each other out. After turnovers on downs by both teams, Abernathy was the first to strike, aiming to put their foot down and control the scoreboard—and they did. Abernathy’s sophomore quarterback, Jagger Wiley, tossed a pass to a motioning Ronaldo Martinez for the game’s first touchdown. The Abernathy Antelopes went for two but failed to convert the extra points. With 8:53 left in the first quarter, Abernathy led Post 6-0.
As the temperature dropped throughout the night, neither offense could find open receivers or move the ball into the red zone. After nearly a quarter and a half, Post finally found something that clicked. On the 4-yard line, senior running back Ian Vergara broke through the stern defensive line to score his first touchdown of the night. After the successful extra point, the Post Antelopes added to the scoreboard, taking a 7-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
With both Antelope defenses dominating the night, five and a half minutes ticked off the clock before Post finally found their way back into the red zone. Sophomore quarterback Landyn Garcia delivered a laser-sharp pass to senior receiver Keyandre Jefferson for a touchdown, extending their lead to 13-6 with 7:26 remaining in the third quarter.
Abernathy needed to score in the 4th quarter if they hoped to spoil the Post Antelopes' undefeated season. A solid finish to the 3rd quarter put the Abernathy Antelopes in scoring position as the field flipped. On 4th and 1, they opted to go for it to tie the game. Quarterback Jagger Wiley handed the ball off to Ronaldo Martinez, who barely crossed the goal line to knot the score at 13-13.
When the Post Antelopes got the ball back, they methodically executed each play, determined to score on the drive. Their efforts paid off when quarterback Landyn Garcia handed the ball off to Ian Vergara, who powered in for his second touchdown of the night. To make things even more difficult for Abernathy, Post successfully converted a two-point attempt, extending their lead to 21-13.
Abernathy tried to rally, but a series of incomplete passes handed the ball back to Post. Though the Abernathy Antelopes mounted a promising drive downfield, their hopes were dashed when Post's junior linebacker Colton Hawkins intercepted a pass, sealing the game. After running out the clock, the Post Antelopes secured a 21-13 victory, claiming the 1-2A District Championship.
