Dominant Defense Powers Texas Tech to 47-Point Victory

LUBBOCK, TX — A dominant defensive effort, 25 forced turnovers, and 17 steals led the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a 47-point thrashing of the Wyoming Cowboys at United Supermarkets Arena on Wednesday night, November 13. Texas Tech built a solid lead in the 1st half that turned into a blowout in the 2nd as the Red Raiders downed the Cowboys 96-49 to move to 3-0 on the season.

JT Toppin gave an outstanding performance in the evening, leading all Texas Tech scorers with 24 points. He added 12 rebounds to claim the double-double and the victory. Chance McMillan and Darrion Williams added 16 and 14 points, respectively, to cap off a dominant night on offense.

Another reason to celebrate other than the win was a rare accomplishment from Devan Cambridge. He eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone in the game against Wyoming.

"I thought for our team to have added Christian and Elijah it really showed how aggressive we can be defensively," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said after the contest. "The difference in the game for me was forcing turnovers. Our ball pressure ramped up and those guys just did a great job making it difficult for them. Our offense has a lot of guys who can score. As long as we keep sharing the basketball, this team can be really good. They're so much fun to be around and to coach."

Texas Tech capitalized off all the defensive pressure with efficient shooting all evening. The Red Raiders went 39-61 from the floor for a 63.9% shooting percentage. Added to that, Tech finished 55.6% from beyond the arc on 10-18 3-point shooting. Texas Tech also made 8 out of their 11 free throw attempts.

Texas Tech moved to 3-0 on the season with the win and now has won 33 straight non-conference games.

The Red Raiders return to the hardwood at home on Monday, November 18. Texas Tech hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Arkansas-Pine Bluff program makes its fourth trip to Lubbock where the Red Raiders own the all-time series 3-0. The Golden Eagles have had a rough start in 2024, with a 1-3 overall record. They have losses to Cincinnati, Tulsa, and South Florida.

Tip-off in that matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.
