Lubbock Monterey Opens Playoffs Thursday Against El Paso Bel Air

LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Monterey Plainsmen begin their long-awaited playoff run on Thursday night, November 14, in the Bi-District Round against El Paso Bel Air. Bel Air has to make the long trek from El Paso all the way to Plains Capital Park, and it should be a good matchup for the Plainsmen on Thursday night.

The Plainsmen claimed the district championship this season and so have a No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs. What that means is that they host a No. 4 seed tonight. Even better news for Monterey: Bel Air is part of a 4-team district and has had less than a stellar season; Bel Air finished with a 0-10 record this year.

Head Coach Judd Thrash talked about his team’s overall mood and what he wants to see from the Plainsmen on Thursday morning. Watch that interview below:

Monterey will continue to polish off what they know on offense on Thursday night. What that means is a heavy dose of running the football. Quarterback Luke Arrington can sling the ball anywhere on the field but has proven to be most effective whenever Monterey already has a solid ground game established. Considering some of Bel Air’s defensive struggles this season, this game should be an explosive matchup for Monterey.

On defense, the Plainsmen need to be ready to stop Bel Air’s rushing attack. While the Highlanders haven’t scored more than 22 points in a game this season, that is no reason to sit back and become overconfident.

Coach Thrash’s main emphasis to his team this week at practice was the mantra “Keep the family together.” Thrash believes that this team has developed a special bond this season and knows that will continue as long as Monterey continues to win. The brotherhood built in practice and on the football field continues to serve the Plainsmen well, and Thrash believes this team has the caliber of a championship contender. Only time will tell, but we, as fans, will get a solid look at Monterey’s capabilities on Thursday night at Plains Capital Park.

Kickoff in Thursday night’s matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m.
