Texas Tech Expected to Hire Houston DC Shiel Wood

LUBBOCK, TX — Less than three days after Texas Tech decided to part ways with Tim DeRuyter, the Red Raiders might already have found a new defensive coordinator. According to reports, Texas Tech is expected to hire Houston's Shiel Wood as the Red Raiders' new DC.

First reported by FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett, Wood previously commanded a top-25 defense at Tulane before moving on to Houston. The Cougars finished with a disappointing 4-8 record in 2024, but the main problem for Houston was not the offense.

Wood was hired at Houston in January of 2024. The Cougars finished with a 3-6 Big 12 Conference record this season. Texas Tech Head Coach Joey McGuire stayed in-state, a pattern over the past few seasons, and looks to have hit a home run if this deal is done.
