LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech has hired Mack Leftwich as its new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, the university announced Friday. Leftwich, 30, joins the Red Raiders after two seasons at Texas State, where he oversaw one of the nation’s top offenses.
Leftwich replaces Zach Kittley, who departed earlier this week to become the head coach at Florida Atlantic. He will begin his duties immediately but will not coach Texas Tech in its upcoming bowl game.
During his tenure at Texas State, Leftwich transformed the Bobcats into one of the highest-scoring teams in college football. Texas State led the Sun Belt Conference in scoring and total offense in both 2023 and 2024, ranking in the top 15 nationally in both categories.
This season, the Bobcats have averaged 37.1 points per game, a mark that ranks 11th in the FBS and is on pace to set a school record. Texas State also averaged 474.3 total yards per game, sixth-best in the nation, behind a balanced attack that ranks 16th in rushing yards and 29th in passing yards per game.
“It was important as we transitioned offensive coordinators to keep our identity as a tempo-based, balanced offense, which perfectly fits Coach Leftwich,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said. “In a short period of time, he has quickly become one of the nation’s top coordinators.”
Leftwich took over a Texas State offense in 2022 that had ranked 110th nationally in scoring at 21.1 points per game. In just two years, he raised the team’s scoring average by more than 16 points per game and broke several program records, including single-season passing yards in 2023.
Before his success at Texas State, Leftwich spent five seasons at Incarnate Word, including one as offensive coordinator. In 2021, he guided the Cardinals to a Southland Conference title and a trip to the FCS semifinals while leading all of college football with 51.5 points per game.
Leftwich also has experience as a high school offensive coordinator and began his coaching career as a student assistant at UTEP in 2016.
Leftwich was a former quarterback at UTEP and was a three-time C-USA Academic Honor Roll selection. He earned a degree in multidisciplinary studies from UTEP in 2017.
Football runs in Leftwich’s family. His father, Spencer Leftwich, is a longtime college coach with stops at Arizona, Pittsburgh, and North Texas, among others. His brother, Cutter, is currently the offensive line coach at North Texas.
Leftwich and his wife, Courtney, have a daughter, Lennie Marie.
