ARLINGTON, TX — Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals took advantage of a costly late-game mistake by the Dallas Cowboys to secure a 27-20 victory on Monday night at AT&T Stadium, snapping a three-game losing streak.
With the score tied at 20, the Cowboys appeared poised to take control after Nick Vigil blocked a punt from Cincinnati's Ryan Rehkow with just under two minutes left. However, Dallas defensive back Amani Oruwariye mishandled the bouncing ball in an attempt to recover it, allowing the Bengals’ Maema Njongmeta to secure possession at Cincinnati’s 43-yard line.
Three plays later, Burrow connected with Ja’Marr Chase for a 40-yard touchdown. Chase evaded DaRon Bland after the catch and raced into the end zone with 1:01 remaining, sealing the Bengals’ victory.
Special teams coach John Fassel was seen signaling for Cowboys players to stay away from the ball after the block, but Oruwariye, playing in his first game back from injured reserve, reacted instinctively.
Burrow delivered another stellar performance, throwing for 369 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Chase. The star wide receiver had 14 receptions for 177 yards and now leads the league with 15 touchdown catches this season.
For Dallas, Cooper Rush threw two touchdown passes, and Rico Dowdle rushed for a career-high 131 yards. However, the Cowboys saw their two-game win streak snapped and fell to 5-8, further dimming their playoff hopes.
Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown left the game with a right knee injury, which McCarthy later described as serious. Overshown previously missed the 2023 season with a torn ligament in his left knee. Dallas' rookie center Cooper Beebe sustained a concussion and was ruled out at halftime, forcing further adjustments on Dallas’ already depleted offensive line.
The Bengals (5-8) will visit the Tennessee Titans next Sunday as they aim to build momentum after the win. The Cowboys (5-8) will face the Carolina Panthers on the road, hoping to rebound after another disappointing loss in a challenging season.
