Garret McGuire Joins Texas Tech Football Staff

LUBBOCK, TX – Texas Tech Athletics announced Wednesday the addition of Garret McGuire, one of the nation's top young recruiters, to the Red Raiders coaching staff as running backs coach.

McGuire, 25, brings experience from his time as wide receivers coach at Nebraska and an offensive assistant with the Carolina Panthers. At Nebraska, McGuire contributed to back-to-back top-25 recruiting classes and helped guide the program to its first bowl appearance since 2016.

The son of Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire, Garret will oversee the running backs while Kenny Perry, associate head coach, continues as special teams coordinator.

“We’re excited to add Garret to our staff here at Texas Tech,” Joey McGuire said. “He knows the culture we have established and is familiar with our offensive philosophy, making him a natural fit to our staff. He will also be instrumental in our recruiting efforts, especially in the state of Texas.”

McGuire has earned national recognition for his coaching acumen, being named to the 2024 AFCA 35 Under 35 list and the 247Sports 30-Under-30 list in 2023.

At Nebraska, McGuire developed a young wide receiver corps, including standout true freshmen Jaylen Lloyd, Malachi Coleman, and Jaidyn Doss. Lloyd, in particular, emerged as a top target, averaging 39.5 yards per catch with three touchdowns of 58 yards or more, joining elite company with Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr.

McGuire also played a pivotal role in the success of true freshman receiver Jacory Barnet Jr., who set Nebraska's freshman record with 52 receptions and is poised to break the overall freshman receptions record in the team’s upcoming bowl game.

Before his tenure at Nebraska, McGuire gained valuable experience with the Carolina Panthers as a coaching assistant (2021) and offensive assistant (2022) under Matt Rhule. Despite quarterback injuries, McGuire contributed to an offense that combined for over 3,200 passing yards and 2,220 rushing yards in 2022. Star wide receiver DJ Moore flourished under his guidance, ranking 15th in the NFL with seven touchdown receptions.

McGuire played his college ball at Baylor University from 2017-2020, serving as a quarterback and special teams player. A two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, he was also a team captain during his senior season. He earned his degree in health, kinesiology, and leisure studies in 2020.
