Jayton Jaybirds Dominate to Claim 1A-Div II State Championship

ARLINGTON, TX — Nothing seemed to be able to stop the Jayton Jaybirds during their 2024 title run, including the state game itself. Jayton's defense dominated early, and the offense did the rest as the Jaybirds wrapped up the championship by halftime. The Jaybirds dominated Oakwood at AT&T Stadium on Wednesday, December 18, to claim the 1A Division II Championship, 54-8.

The Jaybirds' defense began the game with a key three-and-out that led to the contest's first points. A punt that went off one of Oakwood's players set Jayton up at the Panthers' 10-yard line. Two plays later, Bode Ham fumbled the ball, but Colt Gentry was there for the recovery in the end zone.

The deciding factor in this contest happened on Oakwood's second drive. The Panthers drove the football down to Jayton's 3-yard line with an opportunity to knot the game up at eight points a piece. Instead, Gentry forced a fumble, scooped up the loose football, and returned it 76 yards to the house. Jayton took a 16-0 lead and never looked back.

The Jaybird's quarterback, Sean Stanaland, added four touchdowns in the contest as the Jaybirds ran away with this one 54-8.
