The Jaybirds' defense began the game with a key three-and-out that led to the contest's first points. A punt that went off one of Oakwood's players set Jayton up at the Panthers' 10-yard line. Two plays later, Bode Ham fumbled the ball, but Colt Gentry was there for the recovery in the end zone.
The deciding factor in this contest happened on Oakwood's second drive. The Panthers drove the football down to Jayton's 3-yard line with an opportunity to knot the game up at eight points a piece. Instead, Gentry forced a fumble, scooped up the loose football, and returned it 76 yards to the house. Jayton took a 16-0 lead and never looked back.
The Jaybird's quarterback, Sean Stanaland, added four touchdowns in the contest as the Jaybirds ran away with this one 54-8.
Colt Gentry earned Defensive MVP Honors with six tackles, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries for touchdowns.
The Jaybirds secured their first championship in 40 years with the win over Oakwood on Wednesday. The last time Jayton won a state championship was back in 1984. Jayton finishes 2024 with a perfect 15-0 record and will be remembered as one of the greatest Jayton teams of all time.
