KANSAS CITY, MO – A marquee showdown between the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs took a heartbreaking turn Saturday evening at Arrowhead Stadium. Early in the third quarter, Texans wide receiver Tank Dell sustained a devastating knee injury while making a spectacular 30-yard touchdown catch.
Dell hauled in a perfectly placed pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud in the back of the end zone, only for the excitement to turn into sudden despair moments later. As Dell secured the ball, his knee collided with the helmet of teammate Jared Wayne, resulting in a visibly severe injury.
The Arrowhead crowd watched in stunned silence as Dell lay motionless outside the end zone for nearly 15 minutes. Medical personnel stabilized his leg in a brace before he was stretchered off and carted away. Teammates and coaches surrounded Dell in a solemn show of support, with quarterback C.J. Stroud appearing particularly shaken.
Stroud, visibly emotional, stood near his friend and favorite target, attempting to hold back tears as the gravity of the situation unfolded.
The injury cast a shadow over what had been a thrilling game. Updates on Dell's condition are expected soon, but the Texans now face not just a challenge on the field but an emotional one off it, as they await news on their star receiver's recovery.
Dell suffered a broken lower leg that ended his season in 2023. It is expected that this leg injury also takes the Texans' young star out of 2024.
