FRISCO, TX — Ezekiel Elliott's second tenure with the Dallas Cowboys is officially over. After a disappointing year for the Cowboys, Elliott is a free agent if he clears waivers.
The Cowboys announced on Tuesday, December 31. The NFL Network's Tom Pelissero first reported the news from Dallas on Tuesday afternoon.
Elliott took a secondary role with the Cowboys in 2024. The runningback, once renowned as a bell cow in Dallas, finishes this stint with Dallas with 226 yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries. He added 12 catches for 69 yards through the air. His 3.1 yards per carry is a disappointing result in what has been a disappointing year for the Cowboys overall.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that out of respect for one of the Cowboys' greats, Dallas wanted to provide Zeke the opportunity to pursue any potential playoff opportunities.
Elliott, drafted number four overall by the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL draft, finishes his career with Dallas with 8,488 yards on 1,955 carries and 71 touchdowns. Zeke was a force to be reckoned with in the first five seasons with Dallas before injuries ultimately hindered him enough to cause his production to fall. Elliott signed with the New England Patriots last season before returning to Dallas in 2024.
