LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Monterey Plainsmen hosted the Palo Duro at Monterey High School on Friday, January 3, for a district basketball matchup. Despite a back-and-forth game, Palo Duro proved too much for the Plainsmen in the end as the Dons claimed victory 79-62.
Watch some of the highlights from the game below:
Monterey jumped out to an early lead in the 1st quarter before Palo Duro clawed their way back into it. The Dons proved why they are still undefeated in district play as Palo Duro took the lead midway through the 2nd quarter. However, solid offense from the Plainsmen kept Monterey in the contest at the half.
Monterey kept pace throughout the 3rd quarter but could not pull back within two points. Palo Duro's Victor Juarez delivered an outstanding performance as the young man dropped 42 points in the contest. Any time that Monterey made a serious push to pull within the lead, Juarez had a three as an answer.
In the 4th quarter, the Plainsmen began to get a little more desperate and took more chances on defense. Palo Duro spent much of the 4th quarter at the line, and the Dons put the contest to bed 79-62.
Monterey's Smothers led all scorers for the Plainsmen with 22 points.
The Plainsmen return to action on Tuesday, January 7, when Monterey hosts the rival Coronado Mustangs. Tip-off in that matchup is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
